Mud Island

After checking out of the Westin we grabbed breakfast and latte's at Starbucks and drove to Mud Island.

Mud Island is not actually an island but a small peninsula, surrounded by the Mississippi River to the west and the Wolf River Harbor to the east. To get there we took a Swiss made monorail which gave us great views of the flooding Mississippi as well as the skyline of Memphis.

There were two things there we wanted to see. First was the Mississippi River Museum – an eighteen-gallery museum of the natural and cultural history of the lower Mississippi River. Very impressive displays of over 5,000 historical artifacts tell the river's story of early settlement, riverboats and barges, the Civil War on the river and delta music from Blues to Rock and Roll. I really enjoyed it.

I think Gary was most looking forward to the River Walk – a very unique representations of the Mississippi River. It’s a 5-block long replica of the lower Mississippi river, from Cairo, IL, to New Orleans, LA. Every 30 inches of this massive structure is equivalent to one mile on the actual river. All along the way are historical descriptions of events and the geography of the river. It is very impressive.
